THE HEMLOCK CUP:
SOCRATES, ATHENS AND THE SEARCH FOR THE GOOD LIFE
Bettany Hughes is an award winning broadcaster, the President of JACT (The Joint Association of Classical Teachers), a founding patron of Classics For All and an advisor to the Foundation for Science Technology and Civilisation and has spent much of the last 20 years promoting the ideas, lessons and stories of the past to a wide general audience. Her television films on the ancient world have now been seen by over 100 million people worldwide. She was awarded the Naomi Sargent Prize for Broadcast Excellence for 2010 and a Special Award for Services to Hellenic Culture and Heritage.
Using a unique combination of archaeological, geological and historical clues, Bettany Hughes recreates the world of Socrates with a vivacity never before achieved. Over the last ten years she has visited every spot where the philosopher was said to have walked, loved, fought and philosophised. She has investigated all the archaeological digs that are uncovering the world of 'Golden Age' Athens - the 5th century BC - and brings this fresh evidence to bear on the life of the man whose idea 'the unexamined life is not worth living' is thought to be at the root of what it is to live in the 21st century.
