Sunday 26th September 7:00 for 7.30 pm, Chiddingly Village Hall

Established in 2002, the National Saxophone Choir is a pioneering ensemble of twenty talented musicians from all over the UK.  Their aim is to create and promote new music, introducing new audiences to a sound that is rich, resonant and awesome. Central to this strategy is the NSC’s magnificent family of eight saxophones, ranging from the majestic contrabass to the tiny soprillo, which is the chosen solo instrument of the Choir’s founder and musical director, Nigel Wood.

Armed with this impressive array of hardware and fuelled by the creative energy of Nigel and his co-players who generate much of its repertoire, the NSC has already made considerable progress towards its goals. It has presented ten premieres, given various workshops, delighted the public with family concerts, and held critically acclaimed appearances in two consecutive Edinburgh Fringe Festivals. The NSC has also toured, China and Hong Kong, in BBC1’s Play It Again series, held a series of concerts in the Prague Fringe Festival, and receive standing ovations for performances at the Birmingham Artsfest, and at the Klassiek op Locatie festival, Holland

2009 saw the NSC embarking upon their most ambitious project to date.  Entitled ‘7 Wonders’, this unique commission featured 7 movements, 7 composers, and 7 different types of saxophone, highlighting the variety and quality which has become the calling card of the NSC.  Alongside a performance of their 7 Wonders Suite at the World Saxophone Congress in Thailand, 2009 also saw the NSC perform with the late Sir John Dankworth, to whom they have dedicated their new CD – ‘Sax Circus’.

The Sax Family represent the NSC in its purest form – an ensemble comprising of the eight principal players from the Choir. Unique in the saxophone world, this group features one of each type of saxophone. Tonight’s performance at Chiddingly Festival features arrangements of traditional classical repertoire aimed at exploiting the versatility of this saxophone family, whilst providing an opportunity for you to learn the exciting sounds and possibilities a chamber group like this can offer.
