Jazz with Darius Brubeck
Saturday 26th September, 8:00 for 8:30pm, Chiddingly Village Hall
This year we are pleased to welcome Darius Brubeck and his Quartet to play for our Chiddingly Jazz Event. Darius Brubeck was born in San Francisco and has played and taught for many years in Durban, South Africa. He is a Professor, and head of the Centre for Jazz and Popular Music at the University of Natal. Darius is an international star and has taught and toured all over the world.
He founded and directed the first jazz degree at an African university. His father Dave Brubeck has been a major musical influence on him, and they played together with his brothers Chris and Dan as the “Two Generations of Brubeck” in the 70’s.
Apart from writing for his own band he wrote the arrangements and composition for his father Dave’s 80th birthday celebration with the LSO. In 2004, the Lincoln Centre Jazz Orchestra commissioned a piece by Darius and Zim Ngawana, setting music to extracts from speeches by Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu to be read by Morgan Freeman. In 2005, the Rockefeller Foundation awarded Darius a residency as a composer at the Bellagio Study and Conference Centre in Italy.
Darius leads the London based Darius Brubeck Quartet with Darius on piano, Matt Ridley on bass, Wesley Gibbens on drums and Paul Greenwood on sax. They play at world wide international jazz events; playing from music made famous by Dave Brubeck, jazz standards, Africa influences and his own repertoire. I hope you will join us tonight for another amazing jazz event.
