Old Star Morris presents A Border Morris Workshop
Old Star Morris was formed in 1994 and is a “mixed” side of women and men. The Morris is traditional English folk dancing and has a history dating back to the fifteenth century, as do many of the dancers. The Border tradition was revived in the 1960’s and came originally from the counties bordering Wales. Its distinctive characteristics include black faces, “tatter” coats and hats, and a tendency to shriek a lot. Unlike Cotswold sides who are generally more genteel, Border Morris men rarely employ hankies, arguing that a sleeve was good enough for their forefathers. They do however share a taste for bells and good stout sticks.
For this introductory workshop you will not be expected to blacken your faces, sell your souls or indulge in unnatural practices (sorry!), but you are advised to make sure you are reasonably sound in wind and limb, come dressed in sensible clothes (ball gowns are not advised) and particularly footwear (in this case, avoid flip flops and stilettos). Men and women are welcome, and children over 12 years of age.
Our primary reason for dancing is to have fun, so whatever else you leave behind, bring your sense of humour along. Wassail!
